dotsandlines: (Space Quilt)

Heyyyyy, I've been talking about writing and depression too much. My life is not all made up of those things, I swear.

I'm excited about a sewing project for our own house, so let me rave about that for a bit.

A while back, I made a quilt-type wallhanging to cover the front of a metal shelf that we use for kitchen stuff - the mixer and toaster and whatnot. It's cute. I'm fond of it. I've created a monster, however, and the monster is me. I want to make cuteness for every shelf in our house.

I'm limiting this to two. One as a counterpart to the first one, over our pantry shelf. (It will also be kitchen-themed.) And one in our living room, over our DVD shelf. It goes counter to all Nerd Law to hide your giant shelf of DVDs, I know, but I'm gonna cover it with awesome.

I'm planning to make two long banners to hang over the shelves, open in the middle so that it's easier to reach the stuff on the shelves - much like curtains. The rest of our living room is extremely nerd-themed - there's one entire Doctor Who wall, and the others are covered with video game and anime fanart - so I'm going to make nerd banners, too.

I decided to play off the DW wall and a traditional quilting pattern that I wanted to try, and make a space-themed crazy quilt for the backdrop. I made 10 panels, each a little over a foot square, in black/blue/purple. (see icon) Each one is going to feature a different space-themed fandom of Jay's and/or mine. They'll hang 5 down / 1 across for each banner, with borders (sashing) in between.

So then we had to brainstorm space-themed fandoms that are near and dear to our hearts. Here's the final list:
1. Doctor Who (both)
2. Red Dwarf (both, Jay's first)
3. Mystery Science Theater 3000 (both)
4. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (both, Jay's first)
5. A bunch of anime jumbled together: Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion (the Lance of Longinus floating past the moon), and some combination of Vandread, Voices of a Distant Star, and Outlaw Star. (both - actually most are shows that we've both seen; except I haven't seen Outlaw Star and he hasn't seen VOADS)
6. Futurama (both, Jay first/more)
7. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (both, but it's one of Jay's primary fandoms and somewhat further down the list for me)
8. Firefly (mine)
9. Portal 2 (kinda cheating, but...) (both)
10. Plan Nine from Outer Space / general B-movie tackiness, like flying saucers with visible wires and little green men on Mars. (mine)

Yeah, I kinda picked more of them, but we were getting a little tapped out. You may notice an appalling lack of Star Wars, but that's because we are both pretty meh about Star Wars. (Hold your fire. There's more.)

Each will have a few elements from the fandom - ships and planets, mostly; the TARDIS, the wormhole from DS9, etc. - appliqued over the space background.

It will be as awesome as I can make it. I also bought some very cool fabric at a specialty quilt fabric sale that is supposed to look like...I don't know what, but it's a beautiful blue pattern of radiating lines. I see speed lines, or warp drive. Because I am a nerd. That's what I plan to use for the borders.

Now, after the beginning stages of that, I made an extra pile of blocks, because I wasn't nearly finished using up the bits and scraps that I was using to make the backgrounds. I'm going to try making smaller versions for sale, say, a 1x3 (vertical) wallscroll-type piece with three blocks of the same fandom. Here's where I'll try out Star Wars, and maybe some other fandoms that are fun but not necessarily near and dear to our hearts.

But first, long, fiddly, work-on-it-whenever awesomeness that we can keep. Woo.
