It has been a looooong day.

Hubs and I planned to knock out as much of our costume shopping today as we could, planning out a route of two thrift stores, an outlet mall, and a big shopping sprawl area, in that order. We had 4 costumes to piece together, two for each of us. However, at our second stop, I found a piece that worked awfully well for another one that we'd only joked about... so by the end of the day we had put together bits of six costumes.

The streak of not-quite-pair costumes continues.

Pair 1: Femme Gideon Graves and Scott Pilgrim (mortal enemies)

GIDEON
Tie: Jay has it
Shirt: Goodwill, $3
Blazer: Red, White & Blue thrift store, $9.95 (linen, because it's August)
Skirt: I have it
Stockings: These in Red, $12
Shoes: Amazon, $39.99 (finally caved)
Glasses: Half-Price Books, $5.93
Cane: Masquerade, $11.99 + air-drying clay, $13.98 (JoAnn)

To buy: DONE
To do: Replace buttons on blazer; add black top-stitching and pockets (using the matching pants that came along with the blazer!); fix hook & eye closure on skirt; sculpt skull topper & paint it
Total so far: $96.84

I tried this on when we got home, and it is freaking hilarious, I tell you what.

[Edit: This is why I sometimes hate this hobby, though. This costume was primarily thrifted/pulled from the closet, and it's still nearly $100. Ugh.]

SCOTT
Shirt: Jay has it + transfer paper, which I have
Pants: Old Navy Outlet, $17.70
Shoes: Shoe Dept / Adidas, $30; stripes with duct tape (JoAnn Fabrics, $1.99)
Wristbands: $10.77, Amazon
Sword: Wood from JoAnn Fabrics, $5.98 + other materials that I already had

To buy: DONE
To do: Make sword (we have a plan), apply iron-on transfer on shirt
Total: $66.44

Pair 2: Rarity & Spike (both human) (one-sided crushtown)

RARITY
Dress: New Look #6039, white fake-silk. Apparently this pattern is out of print, because Simplicity's website maps this number to a little kid dress. Anyway, it's a pretty basic sheath dress with ruffles around the bottom. Already had the pattern; fabric was $47.45 including lining at JoAnn Fabrics
Shawl/belt/???: Red, White & Blue thrift store, $7.95 (will probably cut this in half lengthwise and use it as a belt)
Pin backs: JoAnn Fabrics, $1.19
Diamond shaped blue beads for brooch pin / purse / cutie mark callout: JoAnn Fabrics, $1.49
Blue rhinestones for bracelet, probably: JoAnn Fabrics, $5.99
Handbag: Wal-Mart, $12
Lace for handbag: JoAnn Fabrics, $4.75
Shoes: Payless, $19.99 (white cork wedge sandals that make me 2" taller than Jay, haha)
Wig: This in purple, $39.95 (NOTE: "Purple" is a myth. This sucker is LIGHT lavender. I should have realized that.)
Wig dye: We had the rubbing alcohol and spray bottle; 6 purple Sharpies at 99c each plus tax... $6.36
Glasses: Amazon, $10.93
Stockings: These in Lavender, $15
All other... architecture, I already have it
Mascara: Target, $3.59
Nail polish (purple, sparkly!!!): Target, $6.24 - I tested this stuff out on 7/28. Two coats held up through helping a friend move with only minor scuffing. However, the polish took nearly 45 minutes to scrub off with nail polish remover and a scrap of felt. Eep. I may just leave it on for Vinyl Scratch.
Eyeshadow: Target, $3.14
Eyeliner: I have it

To buy: DONE
To do: Make dress; make brooch pin; glam up handbag; decide how to use shawl; test out makeup; Sharpie-dye wig; style wig
Total so far: $186.02 (my math may be off; I give up in despair at this point)

SPIKE
Shirt: JoAnn Fabrics, $2.50 (they had the widest range of color in cheap T-shirts)
Fabric marker for stomach stripes: JoAnn Fabrics, $3.03
Green fleece, spikes: JoAnn Fabrics, $4.50
Green fleece, ear fins: JoAnn Fabrics, $1.53
Zipper which we may not did not end up using: JoAnn Fabrics, $3.79
Pants: Jay has them
Hoodie: Amazon, $15.97
Pimp hat: Masquerade, $9.99
Red feathers for hat: JoAnn Fabrics, $2.99
Red grosgrain ribbon for hat: JoAnn Fabrics, $3.49
Felt for fake moustache: JoAnn Fabrics, $2.18 - Put off for a future con.
Plushie gem: I have the fabric
Scroll: I have the materials (foam scroll from a past costume + air-drying clay left over from Gideon's cane, above) - Put off for a future con.

To buy: Tail fabric, to match the hoodie (We have this; I need to update the list. Jay has the receipt...)
To do: Add stripes to shirt; sew head spikes and ear fins; add band and feather to hat; make plushie gem; make scroll and seal; make tail; attach all bits to hoodie. DONE!!
Total so far: $49.97

Pair 3: Vinyl Scratch & Dr. Whooves (both human) (a.k.a. DJ Pon-3 and Time Turner) (unrelated characters in the same fandom, both meme-y background characters)

VINYL SCRATCH
Hoodie (white, faint shiny alligator pattern): Red, White & Blue thrift store, $5.95 (this kicked off the whole deal)
Shirt (dark blue tank): Old Navy Outlet, $3.59
Pants (white linen yoga pants): Old Navy Outlet, $20.96
Giant-ass blue headphones: Half Price Books, $8.49
Shoes (black sneaks with aqua accents): Target, $17.48
Wig: This in Dark Blue, $29.99 + $12.99 teal extensions (OTOH, the colors on this one are pretty good)
Glasses: Wal-Mart, $5 (the color is off, but I will probably just go with it)

DONE omg
To do: Add cutie mark on the back of the hoodie; add extensions to the wig when it comes in; keep trimming extensions till it looks OK; spike wig DONE!
Total: $104.45 (almost 1/2 of that is the wig)

I tried this on too. The hoodie is tight around the hips - it's only a men's medium - but the overall effect is pretty amusing. I do not normally dress like a raver vaguely hip-hop-ish DJ sort. The shoes will be a giant relief after Rarity's shoes, I'm sure.

DOCTOR
Shirt: Jay has it; added iron-on
Jacket: TBA. We wound up buying fabric to match the pants, arg.
Pants: Old Navy Outlet, $17.70
Shoes: Jay has them
Sonic screwdriver: Jay has it

To buy: DONE (add cost of fabric)
To do: Make iron-on; make jacket
Total so far: $17.70 (+ cost of fabric, need to look up the receipt)

...I always go with the more elaborate one, don't I. Haha. Well, I still don't regret it.
